This background is designed for the Upside setting.
Skills: History, Insight
Tools: Brewer's Supplies
Languages: One language of your choice
Equipment: Commoner’s clothes, a wallet containing 25 GP in bills, a set of Bartending equipment (Barspoons, Muddler, Cocktail Shaker, Jiggers), and a photograph of a regular patron with a long unpaid tab.
Running a Juice Joint isn't easy. Crackdowns on alcohol mean you need inroads with some less-than-reputable characters to supply your patrons with the real McCoy.
You have connections to bootlegging operations who are willing to provide you with some basic services, including chauffeuring, couriering, and can offer a single safehouse on the outskirts of the city which allows up to 6 people to live a Poor lifestyle away from the prying eyes of the law. Bootleggers use the commoner statblock, wear padded armor, and carry Lightning Pistols to defend themselves, but will not fight for you.
Liquor laws have done nothing to curtail alcohol consumption, it just moved it into the shadows. Bartenders have had to get creative with their services.
| d8 | Speakeasy Quirks |
|---|---|
| 1 | A Mobile bar that can be packed up into the back of a truck and never stays in one place. |
| 2 | The basement of a single family home in the suburbs. |
| 3 | A jazz lounge which serves juice, but if you ask for your juice “Waterdeep Style,” they'll serve you alcohol. |
| 4 | A barn on the outskirts of town. Offers a nice degree of secrecy if you don't mind the sound and smell of livestock. |
| 5 | Hidden in a barber shop. If you tell your barber the codeword during a shave, they’ll invite you to the backroom for a drink. |
| 6 | A Laundromat with a fake machine in the corner that opens up to reveal a hidden staircase. |
| 7 | Inside a cemetery. A false bottom in a sarcophagus in a marked mausoleum reveals a hidden bar underneath. |
| 8 | Underneath a library, where pulling the books in the right order opens the secret door to your hidden bar. |
